Sally Hersh - Sculptor, Sundial Maker and Letter Carver

Sally Hersh's first sundial commission in 1989 for a sundial at West Dean College in Sussex won the first National Award from the British Sundial Society in 1991 and three subsequent Awards thereafter for other dials. She was commissioned to make the central Sundial for the Memorial Gardens for HRH The Princess Margaret at Rothermere American Institute, Oxford University.  Other commissioned work can be found in the USA, Europe and the UK. Each dial is unique and embraces various styles of sundial including Wall Dials, Equatorial and Horizontal Dials each chosen as focal points within private gardens, parks and estates.  Handcarved lettering, often gilded, is the enhancing feature of many Wall dials. Sally works in collaboration with Tony Brooks, the delineator responsible for the calculation of accurate dials.

All sundials are made to commission. This normally involves meetings on site with the client for initial discussions and observations concerning positioning, content, suitable design etc. and specifically making the dial personal to the client.   Readings are taken to establish accurate geometry. Preliminary sketches are then prepared for approval.

Tony Brooks trained as an engineer and technical draughtsman and is the delineator of my Sundials. His work encompasses the calculation of all data for each Sundial including any Lines of Declination the client may choose to include and all drawings relevant to these. In addition he has designed and prepared the technical drawings for the bronze Equatorial Sundials and Planetaria, and has researched and calculated the large amount of data shown on them. He is also responsible for the design of stainless steel supporting structures and all installation matters.
